Vrijdagmiddag verder lekker aangerommeld.

Seven o'clock... now that's a lie-in! haha, for me then.......That never happens to me, even Barkley's barking this morning couldn't get me out of bed (judging by his barking, Sista, the village dog, was at the door. Well, he'll probably come visit again today.......at the time I'm writing this, Sista just peeked in........

But now out, made a cup of chocolat chaud, because that's what I always do here in Pacaud. I don't like it at home, but here it's lovely. I can already see that it's going to be a sunny day. That means that I'm going to put the table, which I got last year from neighbour Jeannot (who lives down here in a small hamlet), in front of the house, add some chairs and then you'll sit in the sun all day and you can keep an eye on who's coming in and out of our hamlet😄

Yesterday was my first day here and my first task: getting groceries. I always have a supply here, just in case, but I felt like baguette, and pate and rillettes, milk for my chocolat chaud, the delicious rosé from Listel......(that was also finished). Now, shopping here is more like a world trip than a quick trip to the supermarket. I can go two ways, towards Vichy or towards Mayet. I think Mayet is the nicest route. So I take the dog Barkley (he still can't be left alone, because then he destroys everything....separation anxiety) and go. You have to set aside the whole morning for shopping; it's a three-quarter hour drive. As I said, it's a lovely route. At first I found driving through the mountains quite exciting, but you get used to it.... On the way it was green, now still that beautiful delicate green of all the leaves that are just coming out. The blossom was in bloom, and everywhere along the verges mainly white flowers, my father used to have something like that in the garden, a bit more refined I think: grass wall. Then the delicate blue of the speedwell and primroses, meadows full! Here and there some cow parsley. When you drive along the road at first glance, you don't really see that many flowers, but when you stop and look a bit closer at the verge........enjoy..... Especially when I suddenly saw a deer walking on the road in front of me. What a beautiful, slender little animal it is, it wasn't in much of a hurry so I could admire it well until it walked into the verge, into the forest. This was my second deer already, on the way here I had already spotted one, just before I got home. First I always drive through the village of La Guillermie, which is not that far. Then towards Ferrières and that part is always longer than I think. There used to be a small shop there where you could get bread and your first necessities, since last year that shop has also been closed, unfortunately. From Ferrières you then drive to Le Mayet de Montagne, a pleasant town with all kinds of shops: a supermarket, a Mr. Bricolage,restaurants and in the summer a great covered marché aux puces. Quickly did some shopping because Barkley has to stay in the car; luckily he is always very well behaved in the car; he can be alone there. It was extremely busy in the supermarket. Especially ladies who were chatting to each other everywhere so that they caused big traffic jams...but it was cozy. After I had stocked up for at least five or six days (uh maybe I didn't get enough crème fraiche?) quickly to the car where Barkley was waiting for me and home.

vrijdag 25 april 2025

Half past six in the morning, and there I am.... in Pacaud.......Nicely with a thick sweater, a cup of tea and some knackebrod that I had brought from home. There was already a visitor this morning; Barkley had gone outside for a moment and then suddenly there were two dogs in the room...Sista, our village dog came to greet me (and get a nice dog biscuit). Just like in the old days!

It was a tough journey yesterday. Actually I was supposed to leave a day earlier but my car was still at the garage. With fear and trembling we awaited the verdict there. A few weeks ago I had stood by the side of the road with a smoking engine. Fortunately it turned out not to be the engine, it was steam coming from under the bonnet. But anyway, it had to be looked at. With Easter in between, that all took a bit longer. On Wednesday the redeeming news finally arrived... no major things broken; only a loose hose somewhere....No???? Great news. Then it was time to pack the car so that I could leave on Thursday. Arriving alone in Pacaud for the first time. Frank just got a new job and had some rides planned so he couldn't come. But I was on vacation.....and I was ready for a week in Pacaud, and by the way, Pacaud itself too, it had been too long since we had been there (I'm not counting the few days in February).

So I set off yesterday morning at half past five... car neatly loaded, again the boxes with the "much needed" things, that I had collected the past months, with me....but so neatly packed that Barkley had the entire backseat to himself. That doesn't happen often, usually there are boxes there too. Not this time.

The entire ride was gray and grey and it rained continuously. Until, of course, I drove over the border and was in France....SUN.....haha.... not everywhere bright blue sky but here and there..... In France the roads were not busy and there it drove smoothly (Belgium on the other hand was a mess). Apparently half of the Netherlands had decided to go to France because one Dutch car or camper after another overtook me. It really surprised me, it wasn't a Friday or Saturday, I can imagine that you go on holiday then, but on a Thursday? And then also: so many Dutch people... it seemed like high summer in terms of crowds..... And they were all driving like crazy again... no really, tailgating, signaling with the lights, speeding past.......you would think that I was going at a snail's pace on the highway, but I really did keep to the speed limit.....

Two and a half hours before arrival my TomTom had "figured out" that the easiest way to drive was via Lyon.... ahem....... I was already looking at where I had to leave the A31 and according to "Tom" that was only 165 km away while I had in my head that it should only be another thirty or forty km. So at a parking lot I checked the TomTom...it indicated to turn right at Lyon...yeah, no way......I want to go over the N70 (I think) and then that small piece of Flux Libre (€0.40 for the part I drive over). I set the TomTom again and went again. Everything went fine, until I came to a place where everything had been broken up: Deviation!!! No, but that wasn't possible, because that was where the petrol station was, where I had decided to fill up just to be sure (our house is quite a distance from the petrol stations).....how else to drive was not indicated, so I consulted the TomTom again, and it thought: Great, let me show Jacqueline some of the area after more than 12 hours of driving....where I've been, I have no idea, it was a beautiful route, that's true, but with my eye on the petrol gauge (which fortunately wasn't on yet) I decided that I should first specifically look for a pump. Fortunately, there turned out to be one nearby, less than 5 minutes away. No self-service, so a friendly gentleman filled up the tank for me. How much should I put in?

Well, my French still had to get going, so I just shouted "full" and that I couldn't think of the word in French. The man immediately doubled over and thought that, despite having forgotten the word "plein", I still "très bien parler-ed" the French.

And then, huh huh, after almost 14 hours I finally got home. And only then did the challenges begin. The water had to be turned on again, under our house in the dark caverns.... pff that was a hassle. With the phone in my hand, taking photos for the folks back home, who could

see which tap was which, I finally managed it, running water in the house and even warm water! And then I had no energy left. Luckily I found a small bottle of Kriter and a bag of chips (he who saves something has something) and I plopped down on the couch. No longer in the mood to cook (this morning it turned out that the gas bottle was probably empty, so it still needs to be replaced, that too)..... soon I had really had enough and went upstairs to look for my bed. Tomorrow is another day........

Michel Fugain also sang this beautiful chanson in Liège. It is such a beautiful song with so much meaning.
The story behind the origin of the lyrics is also nice to know. The music was already there, written by Michel Fugain. From what I understood, he wanted to perform it one evening but there were no lyrics yet. He called lyricist Pierre Delanoë and said that he urgently needed lyrics for his music. With a bit of sputtering, Pierre Delanoë apparently wrote the lyrics for Michel Fugain in less than an hour and a half. And what beautiful lyrics to the beautiful melody.

Again: then and now

Bravo, Mister World
Hats off, Mister World
even when people say that things aren't going well
Bravo to your mountains.
It's beautiful, it's wonderful
Compliments to your seasons
that give us ideas for songs
Bravo, the sea
Never before has a green been found so blue
a blue so green
No symphony is rich in so much harmony
A wonderful thunder
that makes love to the rain
Bravo, the wind
That makes the grain crawl
that makes the oceans tremble
Bravo, the sun
and the anger of a volcano
Bravo, the rainbow
that brings joy to the heart of a child
Bravo, Mister World
Hats off, Mister World We ask your forgiveness
for those who will hurt you
Bravo, Mister World
Bravo, the dove
If you let him live
We'll simply say: thank you.............

 Michel Fugain: toen "Une belle histoire"en gisteren "Une belle histoire".......

 Michel Fugain: then "Une belle histoire" and yesterday "Une belle histoire".......

Michel Fugain is mijn teener-idool.

Can you imagine? 82 years old and you already have the house in stitches when you enter. And then you give a concert that lasts over 2 hours... unbelievable.

I'm talking about Michel Fugain who performed yesterday in Liège and we were there. I had the tickets at home for months, because I wanted to go to his performance one more time. Michel Fugain is my teenage idol. I became a fan because the KRO broadcasted his performance on TV in, what was it? 1978? Together with his Big Bazar they put on a great performance, a group of young people who celebrated life. That's how I saw it then at the age of 15. That's how my love for France and the French language began.

I bought his LPs and could sing along to all his songs and now I still know most of the lyrics by heart. Five or six years ago I went to a concert of his near Lyon, at a small castle, on the "court" there, in the open air. What an experience that was! I would like to experience that again. So I kept an eye on his concert schedule. When I saw last year that he would perform in Liège, and also in the Forum, such a beautiful location, well,,,,then we had to go of course! Quite a drive but that is worth it.

And it was worth it. What a great voice that man has. When I closed my eyes, there was still that tough man with long hair and wild beard, boots on...... Great! And that at the age of 82... what am I saying? He will be 83 in May!

The Forum was packed with Michel Fugain fans...from the first song everyone sang along at the top of their lungs. Too bad for my recordings because you can mainly hear the neighbors behind him singing along loudly (and out of tune) every now and then (so it wasn't me😃). He did talk a lot between the chansons, I remember that from the last time. I could follow most of it, but you do miss some jokes every now and then. For that you need to have a better command of French. But we enjoyed it...especially the chansons he sang in his time with Le Big Bazar. Already 50 years ago as he also said.....50 years! Pfffff. He still doesn't live up to how I thought he would be in the past...at least I still think he likes to hear himself talk.....that doesn't rhyme with my vision of him back then. I also have something to say about his current chewing gum-chewing wife. She sings along in the band that accompanies him. But I am probably biased and still "hang" on to his wife from back then, Stephanie, who was also part of Le Big Bazar. Partly due to a very sad event, namely the death of their youngest daughter, the marriage fell apart.

To return to the concert: I knew all the chansons and I could sing along to most of them (softly, to myself). Of course "Une belle histoire" could not be missed. He sang it just as beautifully as before and it always brings tears to my eyes. What a good voice he still has. What you could tell that he has reached a beautiful age, was that he forgot the text a few times.....but that's allowed when you are almost 83 and just stand on stage for 2 hours.

Again... we enjoyed it so much......I think he is performing again this weekend in Lille and I can only say...are you a fan.................go!!!!!!!

* ongeveer vijf limoenen

* suiker

* Cachaça

* veel gestampt ijs

* vijzel

* hoog borrelglaasje

* vier glazen

Zo lekker!!!!!

At my brother-in-law and Brazilian sister-in-law's we often got a delicious cocktail, Caipirinha, a Brazilian cocktail with lime, ice and Cachaça, which is similar to white rum. Such a delicious cocktail! We had already tried to recreate it in France, but we couldn't quite capture the taste.

My brother-in-law and sister-in-law were over from Brazil, so when she started making that delicious cocktail again, I was right on top of it!

Needed for four people:

* about five limes

* sugar

* Cachaça

* lots of crushed ice

* mortar

* tall shot

glass * four glasses

Spoon a generous tablespoon of sugar into each glass. Peel two of the four limes, cut four limes into pieces and put them in the mortar. Crush the limes well in this. Then divide the lime juice over the glasses, stir well, and add the pulp if necessary. Then cut another lime into wedges, keep four wedges back, and divide the rest over the glasses. Add a handful of ice to each glass, then pour a tall shot glass of Cachaça over each. Garnish with a straw and a slice of lime.

So good!!!!!

Haven't written anything about "the chicks" for a while.

You can tell that it's spring... the ladies are laying like crazy, especially the green layers: Charlotte, Kontje, Blanche and Esmeralda... every day I get three or four eggs from them! Spikkel is also doing her best with her white egg, but she has become broody this week; she confiscates a nest and coos away when you come to look at her. The sweetest eggs are those of Pluis, our grey silkie... they are really so cute.

Since last week we have two new ladies. They are still separate but tonight I want to transfer them. They are two green layers and actually they should start laying olive-coloured eggs... exciting! I am curious whether that is indeed the case and when the laying will start, because they are still young and that could take weeks... but then the moment when you find such a first egg...... so wonderful!! By the way, I always find it a gift to find the eggs... to me they are like gemstones... so beautiful....

But the two new ladies: They also have a name since a few days: the light brown one is called Aigle, the French translation of eagle. When she puts on her neck feathers, she looks like a bird of prey with her somewhat sharp look.....Aigle that is. The nice brown one with black head and tail feathers is called Olijfje... now let's hope that she will also lay olive-colored eggs!

By the way, fun fact: In March my chickens laid 203 eggs!
