Monday is market day in Le Mayet de Montagne, and a French market is always fun. Now, this is a truly local market, not one with "tourist" stalls. No, it is a real market where the locals meet and chat over a drink on one of the two terraces bordering the market area. Among others, there is a gentleman at the market selling fresh trout from one of the two local trout farms, and we often pick up trout for the BBQ in the evening. Right now, however, it’s just going into the pan in the kitchen because of the dry weather. Of course, the goat cheeses from the friendly lady shouldn't be missing either. They come in various types, from young cheeses to aged, sharp ones. Delicious... and then there are the colored tomatoes from Arfeuilles from the farm there. I am crazy about those tomatoes in all sorts of colors, from yellow to orange and red, black and green. I can already picture a delicious tomato salad with goat cheese on my plate. After our shopping, it is time for a drink on one of the cozy terraces. With a bit of luck, we managed to snag a table because it is always packed. People are sitting everywhere, and it is either coffee, beer, or a petit rosé that is being drunk... and that at 10:00 in the morning 😁. I don't like coffee or beer, so there wasn't much choice left but a glass of wine, in our case a Kir. And I just can't resist—typically Dutch, of course—mentioning the price of the Kir: a whopping €2.00. For a glass of red, white, or rosé, you pay €1.50 here... that is quite a difference from a terrace back home in Friesland, where you easily shell out 4 to 6 euros for a glass. And that's without that lovely French ambiance... We were sitting at a four-person table, and soon two people came over to ask if the seats next to us were free and if they could sit next to us. Of course they could. And as always, especially when Frank is around, we struck up a conversation. The couple, around our age, were out cycling—read: road cycling—and lived nearby. Where we came from... ahhhh the Netherlands... the gentleman had cycled a lot there... lovely to practice his sport there... flat country... It turned out that this man had always road-cycled at a very high level (is that a normal Dutch word??) and had even ridden in teams with Dutch road cyclists. He mentioned some names of former Dutch cyclists who indeed sounded familiar to me. He had competed in races all over Europe. It turned into a pleasant conversation, and after an hour we were still chatting about everything and anything. We declined the second glass of Kir that he offered us. Two glasses of wine before 11:00 in the morning... a bit too much of a good thing... Whether everything he said was true (he seemed serious enough) I naturally don't know, but the fact was that absolutely everyone at the market knew him and waved or came over for a chat...It was at least a "local celebrity". Haha.... maybe I even sat next to a former Tour de France winner... who knows........😃
