What a day yesterday, and what weather..... sun and bright blue sky.........and it was Monday and that means market day in Le Mayet de Montagne. But first, the morning walk with Barkley..... Frank decided to join in and we headed out onto the meadow, because there are chestnut trees at the end of the meadow and I wanted to gather some of them. When you stand at the highest point of the meadow you can see endlessly far....it is sooooo beautiful then, I have no words for it....it is quiet and grand and vast and peaceful and you would forget for a moment that there is war and sorrow in many places in this world. I just stood still for a while, gazing at that overwhelming view. But anyway...Monday...market day..... with three of us and two dogs in the car...off to Mayet. The drive there alone was a treat. Sun, blue sky and beautiful views along the way. Arriving at the market, the square was bathed in a mix of sun and that blue sky.....what a lovely sight. It was pleasantly busy at the market, full of locals; the average age of the market-goers was high, as they have time there to do their shopping and catch up with their social contacts. We felt completely at home there! Naturally, we stopped by our usual stalls... goat cheese at that nice lady's, vegetables at the "New Zealander"—the man speaks very good English (we always want to speak French, but when people hear we are foreigners, they sometimes like to practice a word or two of English, and this man was no exception)—and at one point he used an expression that is mainly used in New Zealand, where our daughter lives, so that explains it... And of course, three trout at the trout farmer's. I always look the other way for a moment when he fishes them out of the tank and sends them to trout heaven. But oh, how delicious they are... New was a stall with oysters run by an incredibly nice lady who tried to entice everyone to buy oysters. She also chatted with us, told us where the oysters came from, and said that you could also buy a ready-made platter from her and that she would serve it on the adjacent terrace (our favorite little cafĂ©)... with a glass of white wine to go with it........ While I went ahead and took some groceries to the car, Frank and Patrick secured a spot on the terrace.... the highlight of market day..... a "kir" on the terrace. It is always packed and you really have to be quick if a spot becomes available........ a table all to yourself on a Monday morning.... forget it.... every seat is occupied immediately. So we had the "kir", and like (almost) everyone there, we were already on wine by eleven... and it was lovely again and we enjoyed ourselves so much..... even the waiter, who is always very grumpy and doesn't like foreigners at all, but ah, we are gaining ground... he even managed a smile this time. Well, and then.....We had a view of the oyster stall and reminisced about the times we had eaten oysters... and whether we really liked them... and sure enough... I couldn't resist... while Patrick was still treating us to a glass of white wine, I went to get a small platter of oysters... The "oyster lady" thought it was absolutely wonderful that we were going to give them a try and promised to prepare the platter and bring it to the terrace. We weren't the only ones having oysters. Around us were quite a few tables with large platters of oysters... what a lively atmosphere... Our little platter was brought, modest, with six oysters; we are beginners, aren't we? But what a treat that was... there on the sun-drenched terrace, enjoying ourselves among all the French people, with our glass of wine and our oysters... And was it tasty?... yes... actually quite good, even in the early morning; the combination of sun, wine, oysters, and good company naturally played a part too! After we had slurped down our oysters and downed the wine, it really was time to head home....new challenges awaited there........
